2 9676/05/M/J/24 © UCLES 2024 Translate into Urdu: In most cultures in the world, it is the custom to give presents to mark special occasions. This is a tradition going back thousands of years: perhaps to celebrate a religious festival or a family event like a birthday or a marriage; to thank someone for an invitation to a meal or for the offer of help; as a sign of love or friendship; as a means of strengthening relations between countries or leaders. How do we know what to give? Some people buy a gift which they have thought a lot about and which they are sure the other person will like. Their own likes or dislikes do not influence their choice. However, others choose what they would hope to receive themselves and do not take into consideration the tastes of the recipient. It is often said that the cost of a gift is less important than the thought behind it. For that reason, something homemade, however small, may be more meaningful than something bought. The way the present is wrapped is also significant, as it shows the care that has been taken. It is so difficult to get every element right, but it is worth the effort when we do.
