2 9676/05/O/N/20 © UCLES 2020 Translate into Urdu: It is often said that trees are the lungs of the Earth. But what does that mean? Trees help the planet by producing oxygen and by absorbing harmful gases. In this way they help humans breathe, reduce global warming and fight pollution. Forests are so important for our health and well-being that we are right to be concerned by their disappearance. Every year, thousands of trees are being cut down for commercial reasons: for wood and paper and to make space for farmland. Forests provide a habitat for wildlife of all types and also, in some parts of the world, a home for human beings. For many people, forests offer relaxation and recreation, for example as a place for walking, camping or picnicking. For that reason, many countries protect their forests from development and destruction. But as populations grow and demand for food, housing and natural resources increases, the threat to our forests is always present. The problem of deforestation is international and cannot be solved by one country alone. We must all work together to save our trees for future generations.
