Q3 · Study Passage 3 in the Insert to answer the following questions (a)–(d)

3 Study Passage 3 in the Insert to answer the following questions (a)–(d). Note: When a question asks for an answer IN YOUR OWN WORDS and you select the appropriate material from the passage for your answer, you must still use your own words to express it. Little credit can be given to answers which only copy words or phrases from the passage. Mark scheme: 3(a) Credit any valid material. Candidates are at liberty to interpret any of the data 12 provided in other ways from those suggested below. Rollo • Rollo has a short coat so grooming him will be a weekly event and so not onerous • Leo has lots of energy so the fact that Rollo needs plenty of exercise would be an advantage for him • the garden sounds as if it is large which would be good for Rollo • as there is a self-contained flat in it/Sophie amazingly looks after it single-handedly • Rollo has already been exposed to mixing with people so this wouldn’t take up family’s time • and gets on with other animals which would please Solera who wants a cat • Rollo has been described as being well balanced with regard to temperament • Sophie isn’t worried about the state of her house so wouldn’t mind Rollo being on her furniture • with the rising level of crime in the area, they would appreciate Rollo being good at guarding the property • and also able to protect them if they were attacked, which could outweigh • Rollo being so huge and strong that he could easily knock Irene over and break her bones • the fact that he loses his hair which could give Irene an asthma attack • He would need more exercise that Irene and Sophie would be well enough to cater for • He requires a lot of room, but they only live in a medium-sized house • great danes only live to about 8 – the shortest length of time of all breeds – • and Rollo is already 3 • Plus Solera is very sensitive so would be upset to lose Rollo so quickly • also, the health issues could prove the most costly for the family budget • and again very upsetting to Solera if Rollo died young or was often ill • not sure if trained, and if not, it’s too late • Sophie might be worried that such a large dog would ruin her beloved garden • which is picture-perfect currently • the amount of time required for exercise would probably be too long for Gio • and Rollo might be too powerful for Leo to control Teg • is of average build so would fit in their house OK • and their garden is also big enough to accommodate her • and she probably wouldn’t destroy the garden so much • Leo would probably be able to control her • the amount of exercise that she requires would more likely suit Gio to fit in after work • and Leo to fit in after school so more family members could walk her • She can cope with the Norwegian cold • She is only 3 months old so has the prospect of at least 10 years with the family • the kids would probably prefer a puppy as they are cuter • Solera, being sensitive, would probably want to give an abandoned creature a home • Teg is the right age to start training and socialising • and it would be fun and/or educational for the kids • as she is very intelligent so would learn quickly • the breed is very healthy so she should live a long time • and shouldn’t be costly re. the vets • with the crime rate rising, she could be a good guard re the property • and protect the kids when out exercising, which could outweigh • Teg’s coat is rough so requires daily grooming which is onerous • and she loses hair all the time so would be bad for Irene’s asthma • the amount of exercise required is probably still more than Sophie can cope with if starting slowly • Teg’s nervous disposition could prove difficult if Solera gets a cat • She needs to be trained and socialised which could be expensive and time-consuming • being a puppy/untrained she might cause damage in the garden Nip • Nip is small re build so the medium-sized house would be fine • and he wouldn’t be able to pull Irene over and break her bones so safe for her to exercise • and would not be very likely to destroy the garden so Sophie would be pleased • He is low maintenance as his coat is short so no daily grooming • with minimal shedding so would be good for Irene re her asthma • The amount of exercise required is low, suiting Sophie who has to start slowly • He has already undergone training and socialisation saving the family time and money • He could protect the children from strangers by going for their ankles and frightening them that way • chihuahuas have the longest life expectation and Nip is only 2 now • so sensitive Solera wouldn’t have to face losing him for probably a long time • with regard to chihuahuas needing to be watched when with young kids, Solera could watch over Leo • The breed is very intelligent so Nip could be trained very quickly • and taught not to go for people’s ankles • the kids would love his cute looks and carrying him around, which could outweigh • the climate in Norway being too cold for him (though he could wear a coat in winter, so then not a minus) • biting strangers might get him in trouble with the authorities • they don’t know the reason why he is being rehomed • He has obviously been over-fed so will need extra care and attention from the family • and might have diabetes/will need some vet supervision to lose weight which could be costly • he might not be the dog for Leo or Gio as not requiring much exercise at all • and are known more as handbag dogs – wanting to be carried everywhere and made a fuss of • if Solera does get a cat, Nip might be in danger from feline attacks Whilst deciding a mark, award 11 – 12 for a relevant, perceptive and balanced assessment (e.g. 4 advantages and I disadvantages; 4 disadvantages and 1 advantage) that eventually endorses one do after having covered at least 5 factors 8 – 10 when one of the criteria above has not been satisfied; 5 – 7 when two of the criteria above have not been satisfied; 3 – 4 when the answer is badly flawed but contains some worthwhile material; 1 – 2 when there is little merit in the answer; 0 when there is no merit in the answer. 3(b) As 3(a) above 12 3(c) The irrelevant piece of information is 8. 3 Point 8 (1) as it is more important to the final decision to know details about the dogs such as their temperament and health issues (1) as they are going to join a family with members across the age range rather than knowing a historical fact about the breed (1) Award marks as follows: 3 sound choice; sound justification 2 sound choice; reasonable justification 1 sound choice; no / weak justification 0 suspect choice; no / weak justification 3(d)(i) Credit any of the following or any other valid point: 4 • have to think about another’s needs (1) so helps to stop you getting too self-obsessed (1) and becoming depressed (1) • pets are very loving and attentive (1) so can increase an individual’s self- esteem (1) as feel wanted and needed(1) • stroking a pet can be very relaxing (1) so can be de-stressing (1) and therefore can improve health by lowering blood pressure / heart rate (1) • stops you from being housebound (1) as it would be cruel for many pets to be inside all the time (1) so forces you to be sociable (1) and there is an understanding that pet owners talk to each other, even if strangers (1) Any relevant content well above 40 words should be disregarded. Examiners should draw a vertical red line at that point. 2 × 2 or 4 × 1 3(d)(ii) Credit any of the following or any other valid point: 4 • vet’s bills can be very costly as pets have to have annual injections (1) and it’s very expensive if they fall ill/need treatment/need X-rays or operations (1) • kennels are expensive places to leave your pet (1) if you go on holiday to a hotel that doesn’t accept pets (1) • if you return from living abroad (1) quarantine regulations mean that the pet has to stay in kennels for 6 months which is expensive (1) • pets need a healthy diet which can’t be skimped on (1) – need meat, biscuits and bones or chews for their teeth and gums (1) • need to buy a collar with a tag with owner’s details on, a lead, a basket, a brush/comb, dog bowls for food and water – as a minimum level of expenditure (1), but might also need a waterproof coat and toys for stimulation (1) and a higher fence in the garden if get a large pet that can leap high (1) • training classes have to be paid for too (1) • damage to furniture (1) which can be costly to replace (1) • pet insurance is expensive (1) and only gets more expensive as the pet ages (1) • the cost of buying a pedigree or thoroughbred is very high indeed (1) and they tend to have more medical problems (1) Any relevant content well above 40 words should be disregarded. Examiners should draw a vertical red line at that point. 2 × 2 or 4 × 1 3 Use of English 15 Note: Up to an additional 15 marks will be available for use of English.
